HOSPITALITY Professionals SA, in co-operation with the Alexandra Resource Centre, is offering hospitality training to unemployed youth in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
The programme, which has the backing of several hotels in the Johannesburg area, deals with a combination of customer service skills and basic food and beverage skills.
After the introductory courses, the candidates will also receive specialised training in culinary skills, receptionist skills or waiter, bartender skills.
According to Hospitality Professionals SA director, Bart Bender, the selection process was tough and only 36 candidates were accepted out of 400. They were selected on the basis of their attitude and mindset towards the hospitality industry. "Graduates from the training programme will be offered employment opportunities in the hospitality and catering industry in Johannesburg. Industry employers are very enthusiastic about the initiative and supporting it by means of product sponsorships, guest lectures, tours and placement of candidates," said Bender.
He added that the Park Hyatt Johannesburg, Hilton Sandton, The Westcliff Hotel, Sandton Sun & Towers, City Lodge Group, The Parktonian All-Suite, the Don Suite Hotels, as well as two catering companies had offered their support.
The programme started on Monday and will run until the middle of February next year.
