Black rhino back in Vic Falls

THE VICTORIA Falls Private Game Reserve has recently released four black rhino onto the reserve – the first black rhino in the area since 1982.

Three female rhino originated from the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage in Bulawayo. The bull was born at the Imire Game Ranch's intensive Black Rhino breeding programme. He was later released into the wild in Matusadona and Kariba, but he kept wandering into neighbouring communal areas and was captured and relocated.

All four rhino were kept in management bomas for over a year to allow their body conditions to improve and so that they could habituate to their new environment and get used to plant species that would form a part of their new diet.

The rhinos are now under the protection of four police detail and two scouts.
