Iona National Park in Angola has recorded the birth of its first Angolan giraffe calf following the reintroduction of the species to the park.
The birth marks a milestone in efforts to re-establish Angolan giraffe populations within their historic range and restore wildlife populations in the national park.
Angolan giraffes were translocated to Iona National Park in 2023 and 2024 as part of a long-term conservation programme involving monitoring, research and partnerships.
According to the conservation team, the arrival of the first calf is an encouraging indication that the translocated giraffes have adapted to their new environment and that the founder population is becoming established within the Iona ecosystem.
The birth also represents a step forward in the wider restoration of Iona National Park and Angola’s natural heritage.
