Luiana Plains Expedition Camp, the first tourist camp to open in Angola’s Luengue-Luiana National Park, welcomed its first guests during a soft launch on July 19, marking a milestone in the country’s efforts to develop tourism.
The project is being spearheaded by Wild Waters Group Directors Simone and Alessandro Micheletti in Namibia and, in Zimbabwe, Directors of Pioneers Victoria Falls and Batonka Guest Lodge Bruno De Leo and Brent Dacomb. An Angolan-registered entity, approved by Angola’s private investment and export promotion agency AIPEX, Luiana Plains Safaris, has been set up to deliver a tourism product that drives conservation awareness and economic opportunities for local communities.
Luiana Plains Expedition Camp is located in the wetlands of the Cuando River within the Angolan part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. Activities include game drives, night drives, guided nature walks and boat cruises to explore the region.
Designed to have a light environmental footprint, the camp comprises 10 tented suites and two guide suites – all with en-suite bathrooms. The main area includes a lounge, dining space and bar. It is expected to officially open in early 2027.
Access is via an informal border located near Kongola and about 140km from Katima Mulilo in the Namibian Zambezi Region, 250km from Kasane and 340km from Victoria Falls. From the border to the camp, guests will travel on a two-hour, pre-arranged 4x4 road transfer.
