Mozambique's elephant population more than doubles

Mozambique’s elephant population has shown dramatic growth since 2018, increasing from 9 122 to 22 178 animals, according to the country’s 2025 wildlife census released by the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC).

The figures suggest that conservation and wildlife protection efforts have been effective. The census also recorded growing populations of elephants and other large mammals in southern Mozambique, particularly in the Greater Limpopo National Park. According to ANAC, this reflects improved cross-border wildlife movement within the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.

The census also recorded a sharp decline in the elephant carcass ratio, from 48.35% in 2018 to 4.6% in 2025, alongside lower mortality rates linked to a reduction in large-scale poaching.
