Nairobi has been selected to host the first Global Esports Cup in Africa as Kenya becomes a strategic esports hub on the continent, according to The Kenya Times.
The announcement follows a meeting between Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, and Global Esports Federation (GEF) President Paul J Foster.
The GEF has been engaging with government and private-sector stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports and the Kenya Tourism Board, while developing the country’s esports ecosystem.
The Global Esports Cup is expected to attract competitors, officials, fans and industry stakeholders from across Africa and other international markets to Nairobi.
Beyond competitive gaming, the event is expected to support tourism and hospitality while creating opportunities in technology, digital production, broadcasting, event management and the wider creative economy.
