A new 55km slackpacking trail has been launched by The Carte Collection. It links four accommodation partners within the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve.
Called the Northern Drakensberg Nature Way, it is a four-day, multi-stage hiking route with luggage transfers between lodges. The trail connects The Cavern, Greenfire Drakensberg Lodge, The Berghouse & Cottages and Montusi Mountain Lodge. Meals are provided at each overnight stop.
Day 1 runs from The Cavern to Greenfire Drakensberg Lodge (11.6km), passing through forests and ridges. Day 2 follows jeep tracks and grasslands to The Berghouse (17.9km). Day 3 is a shorter 9km section to Montusi while Day 4 covers 16km back to The Cavern via waterfalls, ridges and escarpment viewpoints.
The 6 500 hectare Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve was formally gazetted on April 18 last year following the commitment of 19 properties to secure the region’s grassland biomes and strategic water source areas.
