The UN Tourism Barometer reports that Africa received 4% more international arrivals in the first half of 2026 compared to global arrivals, which were up by just 0.4%.
Africa’s performance was strongest in the first half of the year, followed closely by Europe (3%). Sub-Saharan Africa led with a 6% increase in arrivals while North Africa recorded a 3% increase.
South Africa showed the strongest growth (+12%) in Sub-Saharan Africa. Island destinations such as Mauritius and Seychelles were affected by reduced air capacity from Middle Eastern carriers.
The report cites economic factors, such as volatile oil prices and high transport costs, as the main challenges facing international tourism. The crisis in the Middle East ranks third as a factor negatively affecting demand.
The UN Tourism panel of experts are cautiously confident there will be an increase in arrivals in September-December 2026. Considering the latest data and current geopolitical volatility, international tourist arrivals are expected to increase by 1-2% this year.
