FTTSA to expand certification to voluntourism facilitators

FAIR Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) is currently working on a project to expand its certification to companies and organisations facilitating voluntourism experiences for tourists.

The project is partly funded by the Swiss Foundation for Solidarity in Tourism (SST) based in Switzerland. As the opportunities and challenges associated with Voluntourism are not unique to South Africa, it is also hoped that the project will be able to inform similar projects in other developing countries.

Based on the Code of Good Practice for Voluntourism published in 2007, and complementary research carried out by FTTSA, it has been established that there is demand for certification by businesses involved in voluntourism, as well as a perceived need for self-regulation within this growing sector.
