SEARL Derman, owner of Aquila Private Game Reserve, has pledged R250 000 worth of assistance in a bid to rehabilitate the wildlife and vegetation on Robben Island. The situation has been described as critical by Derman, who has since delivered fresh produce and vitamin licks to the island.
He said: “It might seem like a lot of money and effort as the total value of the two bontebok and 20 springbok is under R20 000. I’m honoured to be involved in saving the original bloodlines of these historic and endangered animals and to limit any further bloodshed at a World Heritage Site that is right on my doorstep and of such great significance.”
Vegetation on the island has been affected due to an excessive population of rabbits. Derman plans to remove them to prevent further over-grazing. As there are no predators on the island, the rabbits reproduce at a rapid rate.
In a draft proposal made by Derman and the Animal Rehabilitation Centre, plans include establishing feed and water points and boosting the condition of game with medical feeds. Donations from the public would also be appreciated and interested parties should view the conservation page on the Aquila website where they can pledge a donation of cash, food or medical supplies among others.
