Single visa for SADC region?

TANZANIAN President Jakaya Kikwete is currently visiting countries in Southern Africa to discuss the opening of borders between SADC countries in order to boost tourism in the region. Retosa has recently completed a study carried out by a consultancy on the implications for a ‘univisa’ for long-haul tourists to SADC countries, based on the Schengen model, as well as a visa exemption for SADC citizens travelling between Southern African states. SADC stakeholders are meeting on May 17 and 18 in Swaziland to discuss the findings of the study in its final report. According to Retosa’s Francis Mfune, certain concerns have been raised by some of the countries involved. Mfune says: “Some countries have expressed fears over losing revenue on visa charges, while others have reservations around security. Some are concerned that opening up borders may result in drug trafficking and even human trafficking. Costs are also a concern as some countries will need to upgrade their current technology.” Mfune adds that currently there is a lot of potential tourism overspill which is being limited between SADC countries, and if the process is streamlined, it is likely that we will get more tourist arrivals. It is expected that ministers in SADC countries will begin to make decisions regarding changes in visa policy from August this year. Sue Lewitton (suel@nowmedia.co.za)
