THE SOWETO Food Festival, an initiative aimed at celebrating food from South African townships as well as cuisine from around the world, was launched recently.
The festival, to be held at the Hyundai Stadium in Pimville from October 1 to 4, will include catering companies, restaurants and chefs from Soweto and other townships showcasing their food; The Wine Route; The Whiskey Bar and Cigar Lounge; The Beer Garden and areas for visitors to network and socialise. Embassies in South Africa will be invited to showcase their countries’ food at the festival.
An interactive Chefs’ Kitchen will demonstrate recipes and the latest food trends.
“Soweto is such a colourful place, full of life and nobody is telling the food story. We have also recognised that many people in the township may not get the opportunity to taste food from around world – at The Soweto Food Festival, they can,” say organisers, sisters Refiloe and Mavis Mataboge.
