Units burned down at Basotho Cultural Village

Nine of the 24 units at the Basotho Cultural Village Rest Camp in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State, have been destroyed by fire on Tuesday.  The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Park manager Johan Taljaard says the fire seems to have begun between 02h00 and 03h00 among the units on the left side of the camp between the road and reception area.

“It is not clear how this fire started and we will have to wait for the results of the forensic investigation report.”

Taljaard confirmed that the rest camp will be closed until further notice, but the other areas of the Village such as the museum will remain operational.

The rest camp, owned by SANParks, had been fully booked for the upcoming holiday on September 24. However, SANParks will be contacting all affected clients to either arrange alternative accommodation in the park or to reschedule their bookings.
