Breaking news: Fire damages parts of Le Meridien's Grand Mauritian

A fire at the Grand Mauritius Resort and Spa hotel in the Balaclava area of Mauritius has caused substantial damage to parts of the property.

The fire reportedly broke out in the early afternoon, burning the kitchen, part of one restaurant and several chalets, making a full evacuation of guests necessary. No guests were harmed or lost any personal property but the damage to the affected areas of the hotel has been described as substantial. The guests have been transferred to a sister hotel on the island and other properties with available space.

Arson on an adjacent piece of empty land, from where the fire started and spread, is the expected cause, although it is not thought that the resort was the target.

Insurance assessors are attempting to establish the extent of the fire damage and rebuilding of the affected parts is due to commence as soon as investigations have been completed and a work plan approved by the owners of the resort.

Le Meridien is an upmarket resort brand of Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
