Dutch tourist killed during armed robbery at Serengeti lodge

A Dutch tourist and the manager of Ikoma Tented Camp in the western part of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park were killed last week during an armed robbery, reports eturbonews.com.

The national parks authority has said that the attack took place on Wednesday June 20, according to a report by Timeslive.

"The tourist is from The Netherlands. He was killed the day before yesterday in a tented camp which is out of the Serengeti national park," said Pascal Shelutete, a spokesman for the Tanzania National Parks Authority. "He was killed along with the assistant manager of the lodge who is a local Tanzanian."

Tourism is a major source of foreign exchange for the east African country.
Tanzania’s Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Khamis Kagesheki, and the Minister for Home Affairs, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, travelled to the Serengeti from Dar es Salaam and held a series of meetings with local administration, police, security and national park officials to get a first-hand update on the on-going investigations and efforts to find and arrest the gang members.

They extended their condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

Recently, there have been reports of an increase in robberies of tourists and business visitors in Tanzania. Do you think this will have an adverse impact on tourism to the area?
