Karoo game reserve launches new flights

Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve near Graaff-Reinet in the Great Karoo, Eastern Cape, will commemorate its tenth year in September with various developments, including new flights.

This year marks Mount Camdeboo’s ten-year anniversary, since the three homesteads on the 14 000-hectare reserve were renovated and opened to their first guests back in 2007.

To improve access to the region, Mount Camdeboo recently spearheaded a new six-days-a-week scheduled flight from Plettenberg Bay to Graaff-Reinet airstrip in partnership with PlettAirSafaris. The flight will reduce travelling time to the area and offers an easy and accessible Cape Town-Plettenberg Bay (with Cemair)-Graaff-Reinet (PlettAirSafaris) service.

For those pressed for time, or are reluctant to drive, the new flights are ideal, as the drive between Plettenberg Bay and Graaff-Reinet takes about four hours, and from Cape Town to Graaff-Reinet is a six-and-a-half-hour drive.

Guests at Mount Camdeboo can enjoy sundowners on the reserve’s mountain tops with the new helicopter flights, in partnership with Fly Karoo. Currently guests can explore the Milk River – which meanders around two of the manor houses – on foot, however plans include creating a demarcated circular walking trail. A Milk River map will indicate points of interest, including flora and birds.

Mount Camdeboo is also planning the launch of its own craft range, consisting of deli products, handmade crafts and jewellery, as well as the production of a Mount Camdeboo ten-year vintage.

The long-term vision for conservation includes linking the area between the region’s three national parks, Mountain Zebra, the Camdeboo and the Addo Elephant National Parks, through the establishment and evolution of the Mountain Zebra Camdeboo Protected Environment Initiative.

The initiative will encourage landowners to find value in converting in part or full to wildlife and flora conservation and eco-tourism-based enterprises.
