THE Blue Canyon Game Conservancy has officially been launched in the Hoedspruit area with the introduction of elephant into the reserve.
Jordan Properties has joined with various private properties to create the 12 500h estate located between the Greater Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve.
The property has taken the first step in bringing the Big Five onto the fringes of the town of Hoedspruit by translocating a family of elephants from the Sabi Sands region into the conservancy.
“The aim in establishing the Blue Canyon Game Conservancy was not only to open up new ground for elephant herds so that we could play a role in averting the need for active elephant population management in overstocked reserves, but to ensure that we balanced economic development with the conservation ethics, requirements and the beauty of this area for generations to come,” says chairman of Jordan Properties, Trevor Jordan.
Leopard and rhino are already present in the reserve with a lion pride and buffalo herd to follow within the next few months.
