EcoTraining launches online bridging course

EcoTraining has launched a new online NQF4 bridging course in response to the upcoming restructuring of South Africa’s guiding qualifications as accreditation shifts from Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority skills programmes to the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

The 10-week online course is designed to help field guides prepare for the new framework, which is expected to introduce revised training structures, assessment processes and administrative requirements. Guides without NQF4 certification may be required to complete additional training once the QCTO system is fully implemented with possible implications for timelines and costs.

EcoTraining’s offering is positioned as an opportunity for guides to secure recognised qualifications without stepping out of employment.

“Change is the only constant in this industry,” says Brett Heasman, EcoTraining GM overseeing the NQF4 programme. “Expanding your knowledge and skill set now is vital, especially with the right people mentoring and supporting you through every step. This new way forward is about helping guides grow with consistent support and structured learning.”

Key features of the course include:

  • Live, interactive lectures aligned with Field Guides Association of Southern Africa modules
  • Professional mentorship throughout the programme
  • A flexible format designed for employed guides
  • The advantage of completing NQF4 before regulatory changes take effect

The South African Qualifications Authority is in the process of transferring guiding certifications to create a full Tourist Guide qualification with Nature Guide part-qualifications anticipated at NQF levels 3 or 4. Those already holding NQF4 will be better positioned under the new system.

The qualification also provides a pathway into further study, including EcoTraining’s Higher Education Ecotourism Field Guide Programme (NQF5).

“For years, guiding knowledge has been passed from one passionate individual to another,” Heasman adds. “This next chapter formalises that learning while keeping it grounded in the real, muddy-boots world that makes guiding so special.”
