Firefighters from the City of Cape Town Fire Department responded to the fire at about 08h30 and the fire was extinguished an hour later.
The fire broke out on the second floor of the hotel in the sauna room of the spa and caused smoke to build up to the eighth floor, confirmed Theo Layne, Media Liaison for the City of Cape Town Fire Department.
Three children and six adults suffered smoke inhalation, resulting in four of the adults being hospitalised, said Layne.
The hotel is currently closed while the damage is being assessed, however Danny Bryer, Director: Sales, Marketing and Revenue for Protea Hotels, said they would look to reopen the hotel by the end of the week.
“All guests staying at the Crystals Towers Hotel have been relocated to other Protea Hotels,” said Bryer.
Damage includes fire, smoke and water damage to the spa area and water damage on the ground floor. The remainder of the hotel sustained smoke damage as well as damage to the furniture and fittings.
“The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined,” said Layne.
