Foreigners must register to use cellphones in SA

A BILL currently being discussed in parliament by the justice committee is expected to cause long queues for international visitors at airports and administrative delays for cellphone companies, as reported in the Business Day newspaper.

The bill, which is to be introduced to combat the use of cellphones to commit crimes, has a clause stating that international visitors will be required to supply their full names, passport numbers and address to a local service provider before gaining access to international roaming.

The newspaper reported that fears are arising that queues at international airports will be extremely long as they will register before leaving the airport, especially during the 2010 World Cup.
