Ulusaba undergoes complete redesign

Virgin Limited Edition has announced a redesign of Ulusaba in South Africa’s Sabi Sand. Both lodges – Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge – closed at the end of January 2026 and will reopen on April 1, 2027.

Rock Lodge will feature nine suites including five new Rock suites and two interleading Makwela suites.

The two Cliff Lodge suites remain a part of the mix and will be available to book together on an exclusive-use basis. The lodge welcomes children of all ages.

The exterior redesign of Rock Lodge is being led by local architectural firm Orbic bringing experience to the unique challenge of building into the granite koppie where the lodge is located.

Safari Lodge will offer 11 suites including eight Elephant suites with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and vaulted ceilings. Three new suites, which can be booked together on an exclusive-use basis, offer views over the Xikwenga Dam as well as a separate living area that includes a deck area and boma. This new private enclave, known as the Hide, will be an option for small groups.

Luxury Frontiers will design both lodges’ interiors. The concept includes naturalistic décor, colourful accents as well Tsonga-inspired detailing and craftsmanship.

Wellness facilities include cold plunge pools, Himalayan salt saunas, hydrotherapy pools, rasul mud experiences, a tactile reflexology walkway and a yoga deck with panoramic views. A pickleball court will also be added to the existing tennis courts.

Joe Margison, CEO of Virgin Hotels Collection, said: “This re-design is about carefully evolving what has made Ulusaba so loved over the past 25 years while also future-proofing the lodges for generations of guests to come. From private plunge pools in every suite to thoughtful architectural touches that respond to the environment and reflect the local community, this is a truly exciting moment for Ulusaba.”
