Guided tours could become a more attractive option for tourists to South Africa as a result of the current favourable exchange rate.
Onne Vegter, Director at Wild Wings Safaris and Anita Streich, MD, ATC African Travel Concept, are noticing an increase in interest for fully guided tours in the country. Vegter said the interest was mostly evident for destinations where self-drive tours were normally considered. “It is a shift from self-drive to fully guided itineraries.”
With the increase in private guided tours, Streich said there was more interest in South Africa. Vegter agreed that the weakening rand was creating leeway in tourists’ budgets and that they can therefore “consider the peace of a mind of a fully guided tour rather than a self-drive tour”.

Anne Briggs from Mfafa Safaris and SATSA Mpumalanga Chair, said Mfafa Safaris had noticed an increase in the road transfers, however she could not say whether this was due to an increase in the use of guided transfers/tours or due to the favourable exchange rate.
However, Anita Meijberg from Enchantment Tours, said she had not seen a rise in guided tours.
Wild Wings has noticed in its own enquiries that guided tours in the Kruger National Park, Panorama Route, Cape Town and the Garden Route are among the most attractive for tourists.
