Kenya bans plastic bags

Kenya’s ban on plastic bags officially came into force this week, however the country was completely unprepared for its implementation.

The ban refers to the typical ‘disposable’ carrying bags shopkeepers would ordinarily give to customers making a purchase.

However the country was unprepared for the legislation, which was passed in February, and hence the supply of biodegradable bags is currently very limited.

When travellers have bought duty free before entering the country and the items have been placed in a plastic bag, the bag (not the contents) is likely to be confiscated on arrival in Kenya, which may cause inconvenience.

It is advised that in future, all travellers refrain from using all forms of ‘disposable’ plastic carrying bags, in both their main luggage and hand luggage, to prevent any inconvenience.
