Take a hop on, hop off tour of Soweto

City Sightseeing Johannesburg has partnered with dynamic entrepreneurial company SO WE TOO, to add a tour of Soweto’s hot spots to its existing Red City Tour.

SO WE TOO offers taxi tours through the streets of Soweto, visiting five of the area’s top attractions.

The tour includes an on-board guide who can offer in-depth, interesting and personal information, in a vehicle that allows passengers to experience the style of transport that most South Africans use as public transport on a daily basis.

The tour begins at Walter Sisulu Square in the heart of Kliptown. The next stop is the Hector Pieterson memorial in Orlando West where the guide will share stories of the student uprisings that ultimately changed the course of South Africa’s history.

The next stop is Vilakazi Street – the only road in the world to call two Nobel Prize winners residents. The last stop on the tour is the bustling Baragwanath Taxi Rank and Trader's Market – the biggest and busiest taxi rank in Soweto. From there, guests will climb on-board the minibus back to Gold Reef City where they can then board the City Sightseeing bus for the Red City Tour.

“The Soweto Taxi Tour showcases a unique side of Soweto,” said Kgomotso Pooe, Chairman of SO WE TOO. “By hopping off at the various stops along the route visitors can immerse themselves in the Soweto vibe,” Pooe continued.

He said a guided tour of each stop was optional but highly recommended as many of the guides grew up in Soweto and can provide in-depth insight into the area.

“The City Sightseeing Red City Tour is all about showcasing a whole new perspective on Joburg’s vibrant CBD and the Soweto Taxi Tour is doing the same for Soweto,” said Claus Tworeck, CEO of City Sightseeing South Africa.
