Graskop Gorge Lift Co has donated R100 000 (US$6 198) to the SANParks Honorary Rangers Flood Disaster Relief Fund to support urgent restoration work in Kruger National Park following floods that damaged roads, bridges and camps.
The donation on February 4 comes as Kruger National Park marks its 100th anniversary this year. Recovery costs from the recent floods are estimated at more than R500 million (US$30.9 million), placing pressure on SANParks’ resources.
Oupa Pilane, Co-Founder of Graskop Gorge Lift Co, said the park’s recovery is critical to the provincial economy. “The Kruger National Park is the heartbeat of South Africa’s tourism industry. We must ensure its full recovery without delay. This donation is our commitment to safeguarding a world-class destination that has protected our biodiversity for a century. We cannot afford to wait.”
Located on the Panorama Route, Graskop Gorge Lift Co said prolonged disruption to park access would affect local businesses and surrounding communities.
“We hope our contribution inspires other tourism entities and corporate citizens to step up,” Pilane added. “The park belongs to all South Africans and it is our collective responsibility to protect this national treasure during its milestone year.”
John Marsh, Chairperson of SANParks Honorary Rangers Lowveld Region, said the donation is a boost to flood relief efforts. “We hope other businesses within the tourism sector will follow Graskop Gorge Lift Co’s lead.”
