Airlink has submitted an application to the International Air Services Licensing Council to operate seven return flights a week between Johannesburg and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Nigeria.
The airline’s new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft brings several sub-Saharan destinations within reach for the first time due to its range and payload capability.
“Airlink is applying to be a designated South African carrier on the route. Nigeria, which is one of Africa’s largest economies, represents a significant potential market which is under-served,” said Katherine Whelan, Chief Commercial Officer at Airlink.
According to Whelan, Airlink’s regional network, connections and schedule, enable it to best serve the market for travel between southern Africa and Nigeria. “With our constellation of long-haul inter-continental codeshare and interline partners, Airlink could offer trusted and reliable connections for customers travelling between destinations across the globe and Nigeria via our South African hubs,” said Whelan.
As the application for the route is still in the legal and regulatory approval process, an official launch with timeframes and frequencies cannot be confirmed.
