Keeping up with Nori the turtle

The Two Oceans’ Turtle Conservation Centre has provided an update on Nori, a satellite-tagged green turtle released from De Hoop in November 2025

Since her release, she has covered an impressive 3 700km, averaging 49km per day.

Her journey began in the De Hoop Marine Protected Area (MPA) accompanied by fellow turtles Stella, Pebbles and Cinnamon. Nori acclimated for a short time before heading out of the reef. In the first few weeks, she was tracked heading in a south-westerly direction through the Agulhas Mud MPA.

Her winding movements, when coupled with satellite infrared scans, suggest she spent some time feeding on phytoplankton and chlorophyl b. She then travelled some 900km offshore and approximately 300km off the coast of Namibia where she is now.

“We are so incredibly excited to begin this next step in our journey with Nori. Not only does she have a chance to contribute to the survival of her species but her post-release movements could also teach us how to protect turtles in the wild,” said Conservation Manager Talitha Noble-Trull.
