Maboneng gets African design museum

The Museum of African Design (MOAD) will open as a permanent feature in the Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg at the end of October following a series of temporary installations, exhibitions and events over the past year.

The former factory building is undergoing a full renovation ahead of the official opening event on October 24.

MOAD will serve as a platform to present pan-African design with four exhibitions scheduled between November 2013 and November 2014.

“Engaging with some of the most exciting ideas from across Africa and the Diaspora and sharing them in engaging ways, is going to change the perception of white-walled, glass-boxed institutions,” said MOAD Director, Aaron Kohn. “A key aspect of MOAD is that it will connect to the existing museum landscape of the city. We can’t ignore the amazing resources in the city, and we want to encourage more patronage across institutions,” he added.
