Shamwari Private Game Reserve has welcomed a second meerkat, a juvenile male, into its rehabilitation programme. He was discovered alone on a farm in the Northern Cape.
He was raised for several months by well-intentioned locals and later surrendered to Exotic Animal World in the Western Cape, which contacted Shamwari. A team from the National Airways Corporation and Shamwari Air Shuttle collaborated to ensure his safe transfer to Shamwari’s facilities.
In good physical health and food-driven, a positive indicator for future foraging, his arrival will be followed by a full veterinary and behavioural assessment before he is gradually introduced to the reserve’s resident meerkats, including another Exotic Animal World rescue, Mia.
Meerkats are naturally social creatures so he is expected to thrive in the new colony.
