The Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI), in conjunction with the SA Events Council, is continuing to engage with the Department of Tourism team and the South African National Convention Bureau to lobby for simpler regulations for business events.
This includes recommending an adjustment to the current regulations on the number of people allowed for indoor and outdoor venues.
“We proposed, with support from our colleagues, to allow for the usage of 50% capacity of venues. This would drop the current restriction of 250 people indoors and 500 outdoors,” said SAACI CEO, Glenton de Kock, addressing delegates at the Let’s Travel Workshop hosted by C&L Travel Collection at The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre in Johannesburg on Sunday (November 1).
“Our recommendation on the move to 50% capacity at venues, instead of limitations on number of persons, aims to simplify this operational area, when organising business events and exhibitions,” De Kock pointed out.
Health and safety
He emphasised the importance of health and safety aspects that needed to be taken into consideration when planning an event.
“The industry has therefore also recommended that a set of Event Safety Protocols are gazetted to bring alignment and clarity for our members, and the broader business events and exhibitions industry,” said De Kock.
