Classic Rail, the concession holder for the return of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, has confirmed that Sedgefield Station will become the main steam hub for operations on the George-Knysna railway line as restoration work on the 100-year-old route continues.
In a progress report issued on January 26, Classic Rail said track clearing is underway.
The project has been split into two operating phases:
- Phase 1 – The Waterfront Express: Sedgefield to Knysna
- Phase 2 – The Museum Limited: Sedgefield to the George Railway Museum
Classic Rail has exclusive rail access to the Museum Railway Platform.
All third-class, side-door carriages will be refurbished by Cabinet Carpenter and Builder Les le Roux at the George LA Workshop before being road-hauled to Knysna.
At Sedgefield, a new turntable and running workshop will be built north of the current station. Concept designs will be finalised by Heritage Architect Henry Paine.
