Tourism incentive scheme being researched

A PROJECT has been launched to conduct research on incentive schemes available to South Africa’s tourism industry. The project is a joint initiative between the Department of Trade and Industry’s tourism unit, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and The Enterprise Organisation. Tenders for the first phase, including a review of all relevant incentive schemes, available, are currently being considered. The second phase may involve the development of a more customised incentive for tourism, depending on the outcome of the first phase. This comes as the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Programme (SMEDP) was suspended. The suspension of the SMEDP means that no applications received after August 31, 2006 will qualify for consideration. Applications received before that date will, however, still be processed. An improved version of the incentive scheme should be launched during 2007 in its place. Natalia Thomson (nataliat@nowmedia.co.za)
