Ugandan airport to undergo huge overhaul

The African Development Bank Group has approved €156 million (US$178 million) to turn Uganda’s Arua Airport into an international standard facility, which will improve regional connectivity, trade and tourism.

The funding is part of the first phase of the Uganda Airports Development Programme. Located about 450km from Kampala, Arua serves Uganda’s West Nile region and neighbouring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The project includes construction of a 3.5km paved runway capable of accommodating aircraft such as the Boeing 777 as well as new taxiways and aprons, a passenger terminal with capacity for 700 000 travellers a year, a control tower, access roads, parking and modern safety systems.
