Upgrade for Umgababa beach progresses

CONSTRUCTION on the first phase of the R25m project to transform the Umgababa beach, situated a few kilometres south of Illovo Beach, into one of KwaZulu Natal’s top holiday destinations is due for completion in August.

The upgrade, which started early this year, will improve access to the beach by tarring the road and creating a parking lot. This includes landscaping and improved lighting using state-of-the-art LED lights. The second phase will include second swimming pool for adults and the final phase will see new sports grounds and lifeguard infrastructure.

“The upgrading of Umgababa beach will also encourage further development within the nearby Umgababa precinct with a proposed shopping mall on the cards. There are also opportunities for private residential development on adjacent properties. Developers have already been showing an interest in the area and there is a lot of growth happening in the greater municipal area,” explains Nkululeko Mkhize, project manager.

“With the beach spanning over three kilometres, the hosting of some of Durban's biggest sporting and beach events will not be a problem for this venue. Events such as Easter festivals, concerts and community events can all be held on this beach. The first event to be hosted will hopefully be Celebrate Durban in September,” says Shunnon Tulsiram, head of economic development unit at eThekwini Municipality.
