Wilderness Safaris has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Zimbabwe government to ensure close co-operation with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality.
Managing Director at Wilderness Safaris, Keith Vincent, said that the agreement would encourage investment, as well as lay out the groundwork on how tourism companies were able to operate in Zimbabwe. “The initiative will be instrumental in encouraging local investors to get busy, and shows government’s desire to resurrect the industry.”
The safari company has also announced that it plans to invest between $8m and $10 million towards the refurbishment of its safari camps in the country, and for the acquisition of aircraft to create more air access into remote areas such as Hwange National Park, Mana Pools National Park and Matusadona National Park from the Victoria Falls, Kariba and Harare.
The funds will also be utilised for various conservation measures, including anti-poaching patrols, road networks and fire breaks.
“We feel that Zim is an easy tourism destination to resurrect. To get tourism volumes up, which is part and parcel of the tourism solution, we need to be able to get revenue into national parks, conserve wildlife and employ people.”
