Zanzibar faces power rationing

Zanzibar is undergoing power rationing, which began on September 25 and will continue until October 18.

The Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO) said the rationing was the result of technical faults, according to a report in the Tanzania Daily News. “After inspecting the power cable, we have detected some technical faults which must be rectified to avoid future problems,” Mbarouk Hassan, ZECO Manager, said.

Abdullah Rashid, Assistant Director of Madeira Tours & Safaris, said the power rationing should not impact tourism to the island. “The rationing starts from 19h00 until 21h00 everyday and the power will go off on a routine timetable.” He added that electricity cuts should not last longer than one hour in each region.
