Statistics South Africa’s quarterly survey on tourist accommodation shows a 4.8% increase in total income for the sector year-on-year from May 2018-2019. The main contributors in May 2019 were ‘other’ accommodation, which contributed 2.6%, and hotels which contributed 1.2%.
The data was derived from the monthly survey of the tourist accommodation industry, which in turn was based on a sample drawn from the 2018 Business Sampling Frame.
The survey looks at various factors affecting hotels, motels, caravan parks, camping sites, guest houses, guest farms and other forms of short-stay commercial accommodation.
The 2018 sample of 1 143 enterprises was drawn from a group of 4 323 enterprises.
In May, caravan parks and camping sites showed the largest year-on-year growth of 44.6%, followed by guest-houses and guest farms with 12.1% and ‘other’ accommodation with 9.3%.
