Members of the Finance Union (formerly known as the South African Society of Bank Officials, or Sasbo) are planning to embark on a major banking strike on September 27.

Joe Kokela, the union’s general secretary, has confirmed to Tourism Update that the strike will affect all banking services, and that speedpoints (instore card payment systems) will also not be working.

A court interdict to prevent the strike? is being sought by Business Unity South Africa (Busa) and the Banking Association South Africa (Basa) which will be decided on September 25, Joe says.

While he doubts that the interdict will be granted, Joe says that should this be the case, the union will abandon strike action on September 27.

Between 30 000 and 40 000 members across the financial industry are expected to be involved in strike action on September 27.
