Authorities respond to second incident in Laikipia

Another incident took place in Laikipia over the weekend, resulting in the shooting of a woman in Ol Ari Nyiro.

The Kenya Tourism Board and Kenya Tourism Federation have assured the public that the unrest and security problems in Laikipia are restricted to a few localities and a small number of ranches. This follows an incident that took place on Sunday morning.

Kuki Gallmann was shot and severely injured while driving in her own conservancy at Ol Ari Nyiro in Lakipia. The Kenya Tourism Board and Kenya Tourism Federation expressed their sadness and said their thoughts and prayers for a full and quick recovery were with Gallmann and her family at this time.

The Kenyan tourism industry said in a statement that they fully supported the investigation of the incident by the police to ensure the perpetrators were found.

The incident took place about 250 kilometres from Nairobi. Well-known wildlife conservancies and tourism facilities in the rest of Laikipia were not affected and remained calm and peaceful, said Kenya Tourism Board and Kenya Tourism Federation.

“We believe that the government of Kenya will be giving the highest priority to restoring law and order for all the people in the affected area so that they can enjoy the normal peace and security found throughout the rest of Laikipia County,” concluded Kenya Tourism Board and Kenya Tourism Federation.

Last month, Tristan Voorspuy, Co-owner of Offbeat Safaris and Soisan Ranch, was killed  in an ambush in the county. Kenya Police Spokesman, Charles Owino, told Tourism Update that police had heightened security in the county to protect visitors, investors and tourist facilities, including camps and lodges.
