Kenya’s black rhino population is showing signs of recovery with a long-running conservation initiative in the Maasai Mara yielding promising results.
For over a decade, Sala’s Camp has supported local rhino rangers with equipment funding, specialist training and, more recently, advanced monitoring tools. The Safari Collection Footprint Trust has accelerated progress in the past two years, assisting with two ear-notching and tagging operations. These efforts have led to the fitting of GPS transmitters on more than 20 Eastern black rhinos in the region.
The rollout of the EarthRanger real-time monitoring system, installation of a long-range wide area network, and the development of the Maasai Mara Conservation Centre are enabling better tracking and protection of rhinos.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Narok County government, conservation partners as well as donors and tourism stakeholders such as The Safari Collection.
