Maun International Airport will undergo expansion to accommodate the ever increasing Maun passenger traffic and ease overcrowding at the terminal building.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications Neil Fitt revealed the developments to aviation stakeholders at an aviation stakeholder's conference in Maun last month.
Commenting on the plans, Modipe Nkwe, Public Affairs Manager at the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) told Tourism Update that construction has not yet started but the expansion project of the airport is expected to take four years.
Construction will start when as soon as the tender is awarded, he said. Construction will also be restricted to the terminal building because the runway extensions were completed in 2012, a new tower and technical wing were completed in May this year.
According to Nkwe, the planned development is in response to the current congestion at the airport.
A temporary terminal building is scheduled to be operational by May 2017.
