THE team at Kwalata Game Ranch in Dinokeng have been busy playing an active role in their community by undertaking various hands-on initiatives.
One of these initiatives has seen Kwalata join forces with Helpmekaar College in Johannesburg to design an outreach programme where learners can expand their knowledge and skills through practical training.
“This programme recruits approximately 120 learners, who in three groups of 40 undertake various projects with the intention of leaving a legacy for the ones they help,” says owner, Charl Pretorius.
So far this year, the Helpmekaar learners have spent three days painting the Ikageng and Letabong Day Care Centres.
Previously, three rotating groups painted a daycare centre in Steve BikoVille, Kekana Gardens before visiting Saint Camillus Catholic School where they sandpapered and varnished school benches. They also attended brick-making classes at the Phananani Development Centre.
Kwalata recently received the Tshwane Tourism Award, which recognises efforts of tourism leaders actively involved in enhancing the quality of life of the community.
“Our reward is knowing that we have personally and intimately touched the lives of one school learner at a time, one little toddler in a daycare centre at a time. This, I believe, is a proud legacy for tourism success”, says Pretorius.
