Fatal shooting at Cradle safari lodge

Paul Schulte, the 56-year-old estate manager and former husband of Heia Safari Ranch owner, Gaby Burgmer, was killed outside his home at Heia Safari Ranch, situated below the Swartkop Mountain Range next to the Cradle of Humankind on April 2.

Colonel Lungile Dlamini from the SAPS confirmed that there had been a fatal armed robbery and shooting outside a private home at Heia Safari Ranch by a group of unknown suspects at approximately 20h00 on April 2.

“The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage. Schulte was robbed of his wallet and pistol,” said Dlamini.

Close family friend and fellow hotelier, Gilbert Hickman, said the family was devastated, particularly as it followed the tragic murder five years ago of Franz Richter, founder of the Heia Safari Ranch.  At the time four of the six suspects were found guilty and sentenced.

Dlamini confirmed that the SAPS would be carrying out an intensive investigation into the incident and appealed to the community to come forward with any leads.

“The untimely death of Schulte is deeply mourned by both Gaby, their daughter Bianca, and the entire staff and community at Heia Safari,” said a statement by Heia Safari Ranch.
