Four elephants have been spotted roaming near the Zutshwa area in Botswana’s Kgalagadi region, bringing the animals within approximately 70 km of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park – the only major park under SANParks management without elephants.
The sighting was confirmed by Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks, which works with SANParks in the joint management of the cross-border Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
This marks the closest recorded approach of elephants to the park in nearly 10 years. The last sighting occurred in 2015 when a small herd briefly entered the region before moving on.
Although the arid Kalahari landscape is not a typical elephant habitat, this latest movement may indicate changing migration patterns or an expansion of elephant range in southern Botswana.
Visitors to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park are encouraged to remain alert for possible sightings and share any photographs or location details with park management at the nearest camp.
Guests are reminded to follow standard park regulations and refrain from exiting vehicles or approaching wildlife when elephants are sighted.
