Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) has certified Kara-Tunga Safari Camp, making it the first tourism business in Uganda to achieve Fair Trade Tourism certification.
Kara-Tunga, established in 2016, operates cultural and adventure tours in Uganda’s Karamoja sub-region with a focus on community-based tourism, cultural heritage and biodiversity experiences. The company also operates eco-friendly accommodation and works on community empowerment and conservation initiatives.
“We are proud of what we have achieved and recognise the importance of this internationally accredited certification. We also look forward to ensuring that Timu and Morungole Eco Camps, as well as the new Namoni Lodge, will be opened soon to achieve certification in the near future,” said Rogers Mabiro, Operations Manager at Kara-Tunga Safari Camp.
The company’s Timu and Morungole Eco Camps are currently classified as FTT-Engaged, a step-in programme designed to help businesses work towards full certification.
FTT auditors assessed Kara-Tunga over six months against 184 criteria across six pillars:
- Fair Share
- Fair Say
- Respect
- Reliability
- Transparency
- Sustainability
The process included on-site interviews with staff, guests and community representatives as well as document reviews and field inspections.
The company’s sustainability initiatives include biodiversity conservation, reforestation projects, support for local honey producers, cultural heritage preservation and programmes focused on education and livelihoods for local communities.
