Monwabisi Kalawe will be appointed as the next CEO of SAA according to a report published in Business Day on April 9. The airline however refused to comment on what it called ‘speculative reports’.
Spokesperson for SAA Tlali Tlali told Tourism Update: “We are unable to assist with information in relation to speculative reports in the media on who the CEO will be. These reports are based on faceless sources and the only dignified thing to do is to ignore them.”
According to Tlali Tlali, the Board of Directors at SAA followed due process for the appointment of the next CEO for the airline. He explained the process entailed inviting interested candidates to submit applications and conducting interviews with candidates that made it to the shortlist. He added: “Once that was finalised, a recommendation was communicated to the Minister of Public Enterprises. It is our understanding that the Minister will subject the recommendation to a Cabinet process after which an announcement could be made.”
Kalawe is currently CEO of Compass Group SA, a company that provides food as well as a range of selected support services. Previously, he fulfilled a role in the aviation industry as the general manager at Cape Town International Airport from 1998 to 2004.
