KNP floods: Some camps closed for ‘many months’

SANParks has provided updates on the status of several camps in the Kruger National Park (KNP) affected by heavy flooding in January.

Partial reopening of Letaba Rest Camp – which suffered extensive damage to accommodation, fencing and main areas – will take at least three months. The camp will only be fully operational towards the end of the year. The shop, filling station and Elephant Museum opened on February 10.

Shingwedzi Rest Camp will remain closed for overnight visits for at least another month pending repairs to the perimeter fence.

Balule Rest Camp suffered extensive damage, which will take “many months to repair” while Olifants Rest Camp will open once its supply of safe drinking water is restored.

Limited units are available at Mopani Rest Camp where temporary facilities for a restaurant are still being constructed. It will be at least six weeks before the camp reaches 100% operating capacity.

Shimuwini Bush Camp also sustained significant damage and will remain closed for several months.

Sirheni Bush Camp is set to open once an alternative access road is complete while Talamati Bush Camp has opened with access via the S106 and S140 roads.

“Official alerts will be issued as and when definite dates are known,” SANParks stated.
