KwaZulu Natal has officially approved the application for a nudist-friendly beach at Mpenjati, near the Blue Flag Trafalgar Beach. The decision to approve the beach comes after months of consultation with stakeholders and residents.
Serge Pavlovic, board member of the South African National Naturist Association (SANNA), says he is “over the moon” with the municipality’s decision to approve the beach and to change the relevant by-laws. “Once the municipality has changed the wording in the by-laws at the end of November, we can move on with signage, demarcation and rezoning of the beach.”
Pavlovic says he would love to be ready for December 14, which is World Naturist Day for the Southern Hemisphere. “It would be lovely if we could officially open Mpenjati Beach as naturist beach on that day. But there is still a lot of ‘red tape’ to cut.”
According to Pavlovic, work really begins now, and SANNA will consult with the Municipality and Department of Environmental Affairs regarding the facilities near the beach. “We have been informed that structures on the beach probably cannot be permanent but it is early days to say how everything going to pan out.”
He adds that SANNA will start liaising with overseas organisations, and start promoting the beach as much as possible both overseas and in South Africa. “We will also try to engage local tourism boards, travel agencies, B&Bs and other accommodation owners to bring tourists to the area.”
