Construction of the Senqu Bridge in Lesotho’s Mokhotlong district is complete, marking an important step in the second phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Built at an estimated R2.4 billion (about US$130 million), the bridge replaces the existing crossing, which will be submerged once the Polihali Dam is impounded. It will maintain access to Mokhotlong, Sani Pass and nearby areas.
Launched in 1986 as a joint effort between Lesotho and South Africa, the multi-phase Lesotho Highlands Water Project supplies water to South Africa’s Gauteng region while generating hydropower for Lesotho.
Reported progress from the South African government puts the Polihali Dam at 53% complete and the Polihali Transfer Tunnel at 49% complete.
