SAA has confirmed that it has changed its night flights to Harare to an earlier departure time.
The SA024 flight to Harare that is normally scheduled to depart OR Tambo at 19h40 has been changed and now departs at 16h20 and arrives at 18h00. The change came into effect on October 9.
The flight time was changed due to concerns raised by the SAA flight deck crew about low visibility at night time at Harare International Airport and during adverse weather conditions.
Aaron Munetsi, Regional General Manager: Africa & Middle East said, “We are told that the construction that is taking place to upgrade the airport could have inadvertently led to this situation. Regardless, we have raised our concerns with relevant authorities at the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe who have indicated keen eagerness to rectify the situation.”
He said that the SAA flight safety officials will be going to Harare to engage with the authorities and get a first-hand assessment of the situation. On their return they are expected to produce a report that would enable SAA to decide the way forward.
The flight will depart at the previous time of 19h40 when the lighting situation has been rectified but there was no mention of when that would be.
There are no changes to the number of flights.
